Section 1 - Environmental and health impacts presented in your reading
The article that I read was titled "‘Tsunami of data’ could consume one fifth of global electricity by 2025". The environmental impacts that are present in my reading pertain to technologies use and its potential ability to cause bad global emissions. As it stood in 2015 global computing power from all the devices we use such as high definition streaming, surveillance cameras, and basically all other internet/power run devices are lead to the consumption of 3-5% of the worlds electricity.
The Human Health impacts that are present in this article stray a little bit far away from immediate harm. This is because the use of technology is projected to worsen the climate. Technology is only fairly new on the radar so its effects haven't been fully measured. With that being said technology is said to create climate change to some extent. This could lead to the risk of illness due to raising of temperatures and even effects on the immune system and nervous system.
The things causing the impacts include a large tsunami of data, at this day and age everything is digitalized. As the fifth generation of mobile technology is coming, the traffic on the internet is a lot higher than it used to be. Cars, machines, AI are all being frequently used now. All of this data is stored in data servers and centers, which ties in directly to power consumption and electricity usage.
Section 2 - Comparison with a different type of human impact
One thing that I would like to talk about in comparison to technology's impact on the climate is vehicles and their direct impact on climate change. An Article titled "Vehicles are now America's biggest CO2 source but EPA is tearing up regulations". There are a lot of things that contribute to climate change but nothing compares to what vehicles emit. One of the largest contributors to changing temperatures and climate change are cars, trucks, planes and even shipping. This is not surprising to me as the amount of cars that are out on the road today is astounding. I feel as if vehicles are different to technology's impact. This is because technology is more of a threat for the future. However, vehicles have been making its incline slowly in the past 40 years, and they now stand at the top for pollution. The uses of technology and vehicles are kind of the same but they can also be very different. If you think about it, humans wouldn't leave too much of a print on the earth if we stuck to having to use only things we need. However, as time has past we as people have adapted to the earth and we now use things to benefit us while hurting the environment in the process.
Section 3 - Describe the role of A typical person at Keene State College in the use of these resources.
Every day students at Keene State College utilize technology a vast amount. Wether it's using it for classes, homework, personal uses or anything else, its use is abundant. Over the past year and a half we have had to use it even more due to Covid-19. The technology used can be applied in the same way as it was in the article. The information that is being saved is sent to data centers to store, which take up a lot of resources to run. This leads directly to excessive electricity usage and this in turn has been predicted to change the climate.
As college students, we pretty much all have driven a vehicle at some point. The amount of us that have vehicles on campus is a pretty high percentage. As the vehicles are at school, it is common for people to chose to drive somewhere instead of just walking. In my opinion this can lead to higher emissions around the area of keene. If this person had chose to walk, no matter how insignificant there would be a good effect on the environment. I think that if we wanted to lower the amount of pollution we emit we could walk somewhere as opposed to driving. This would also work well if someone were to ride a bike instead of driving their vehicle.
In my appilcation 1 assignment I wrote about the same thing and agree with a lot of the same things you mentioned in yours. I also agree that the consumption of data is becoming a serious problem and is having a serious affect on the climate. I found that the data about cars and how they now make up most of the worlds pollution was very interesting. I think that you did a very good job with the photos and the captions for the photos and helping with the understanding of the article. As a consumer of technology I believe that I have an affect on what is going on. I am a big contributor to the data consumption and have a serious affect on it.
